How long does it take to rank on Google Maps? A 90-day example

What actually happens in the first 90 days of local SEO, month by month, using a real restaurant that moved from around #19 into the Google Maps top three.

"How long until we show up on Google Maps?" is the first question almost every owner asks. It's a fair one. You're paying for work you can't see, and the phone isn't ringing yet.

The honest answer is weeks to a few months. To make that useful, here's what actually happened, month by month, for one restaurant that went from around #19 to the Google Maps top three in 90 days.

The starting point

Signature Spice is a family-run Indian restaurant in Groveport, Ohio, near Columbus. Good food, loyal regulars. Online it barely existed.

A grid scan of the area showed it ranking around position 19 for searches like "Indian restaurant near me". Position 19 on Google Maps means nobody scrolls far enough to see you. The profile was half finished: missing categories, a thin description, a few photos, and only a handful of reviews.

Month one: fix what Google reads

The first month is mostly the Google Business Profile itself. It's the cheapest, fastest win and the foundation for everything else.

  • Categories. The primary category and the right secondary ones, so Google knows what the business is.
  • Description. A plain-English description of the food, the dining options and the area served.
  • Menu, services and attributes. Everything a customer might filter on.
  • Photos. Real photos of the food, the room and the outside, so people recognise it when they arrive.

Rankings rarely jump in month one. Google needs time to recrawl and trust the changes. What you get is a profile that converts better for the people who do find it.

Month two: build trust signals across the web

Google ranks businesses it trusts. One way it decides is whether the same name, address and phone number appear consistently across the web.

For the restaurant, that meant listing it on more than 150 directories with identical details, adding links back to the profile and website, and starting a steady flow of customer reviews. This is usually where rankings start to move, often unevenly. One area improves, another stays put.

Month three: rankings settle higher

By day 90, the restaurant was #3 for "Indian restaurant in Groveport". The same grid scan that had been mostly red was mostly green.

The profile numbers for January to April 2026 show what that looks like in practice: 424 calls, 1,665 direction requests and 1,495 website clicks. See the full restaurant case study.

Why rankings wobble

If you check your ranking every day, you'll see it move up, then down, then up again. That's normal. Google tests results, competitors post and collect reviews, and your own changes take time to be counted.

A carpet cleaner in Pottstown we tracked weekly climbed from #15 to #2 for "carpet drying service" between July and October, but not in a straight line. See how the carpet cleaner's rankings moved. Judge progress over weeks and months, not days.

What makes it faster or slower

  • Competition. A dentist in a busy city takes longer than a land clearing crew in rural Texas.
  • How broken the profile was. Fixing missing basics moves faster than polishing a profile that's already complete.
  • Reviews. A steady flow of new reviews helps. One burst followed by silence doesn't.
  • Distance. Google favours businesses close to the searcher. You'll always rank better near your address than across town.
  • Consistency. Posting, photos and replies every week keep a profile looking active.

How to track it properly

Don't just search your business name. Search the service you sell, from the places your customers live. A recycler we worked with ranked #1 in San Diego but #54 in Spring Valley for the same service. A single "city rank" hides most of the story.

The simplest version: once a week, on your phone, search "[your service] [a town you serve]" for three towns, and write down where you appear. If you want it done properly, that's part of how I approach getting local businesses found, whether that's for restaurants and hospitality or clinics.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to rank on Google Maps?

Usually between 1 and 4 months for visible movement. The restaurant in this example reached the top three in 90 days. Busy cities and competitive services can take longer.

Why did my ranking drop after it improved?

Rankings fluctuate as Google tests results and competitors make changes. A dip after a climb is common. Look at the trend over several weeks.

Can I rank on Google Maps outside my town?

It's harder, because Google favours businesses close to the person searching. Service area businesses can improve by setting their service areas properly and building signals for each town.

What should I fix first?

Your Google Business Profile: categories, description, photos, services and hours. It's free, and it's what Google and customers look at first.
