Why is my Shopify store not showing up on Google? 10 causes and fixes

Shopify store not showing on Google, even for its own name? Check these 10 causes, from password protection to missing sitemaps, and how to fix each.

You've built the store, added products, maybe even run some ads. Then you search Google for your store, and it isn't there. Or it only appears for your exact brand name and never for the products you sell.

There are two different problems here, and they have different fixes:

  1. Google hasn't indexed the store (it doesn't appear even for your brand name). See causes 1–5.
  2. Google has indexed it, but it doesn't rank for product searches. See causes 6–10.

To check which you have, search Google for site:yourstore.com. If nothing comes up, it's an indexing problem.

Indexing problems (Google can't see your store yet)

1. The store is still password-protected

New Shopify stores have a password page turned on by default, and search engines can't get past it. If your store is ready to sell, remove the password in Online Store → Preferences. (On some plans you need a paid plan before you can remove it.)

2. The store is brand new

Google has to discover a new store before it can index it, and that can take days to weeks. You can speed it up by setting up Google Search Console (next step) and requesting indexing for your homepage and key collection pages.

3. You haven't connected Google Search Console

Search Console is free and tells you exactly what Google sees.

  • Add your store's domain as a property and verify it (DNS verification is the most robust).
  • Submit your sitemap. Shopify generates one automatically at yourstore.com/sitemap.xml.
  • Use URL inspection to request indexing of important pages.

4. You're using the free myshopify.com address

Stores that only use the default yourstore.myshopify.com address tend to look less established and are harder to build a brand around. Connect your own domain, and make sure it's set as the primary domain so Google indexes one version.

5. Pages are blocked from indexing

Less common, but worth checking if specific pages are missing. Some apps or theme edits add "noindex" tags or block pages in robots.txt. Search Console's Pages report shows which pages are excluded and why.

Ranking problems (indexed, but invisible for products)

6. Weak titles and descriptions

Every product and collection in Shopify has a "Search engine listing" section where you can edit the page title, description and URL. Use the words shoppers actually search ("linen summer dress", not "The Riviera") and write descriptions that make someone want to click.

7. Thin or copied product descriptions

Descriptions copied from a supplier appear on hundreds of other sites, which gives Google little reason to rank yours. Write your own: who it's for, what problem it solves, materials, sizing and care, and answers to the questions customers ask. This also helps conversion. See the Shopify product page checklist.

8. Collections that don't target searches

Collection pages often rank better than individual products for broader searches ("women's running shoes"). Give each collection a clear title, a short intro paragraph and a sensible URL.

9. A slow store

Speed affects both rankings and sales. Common causes on Shopify are oversized images, too many apps, and heavy themes. Remove apps you don't use and check your speed again after each change.

10. No free product listings

Google can show your products for free in the Shopping tab and other Google surfaces. Shopify's Google & YouTube sales channel connects your store to Google Merchant Center and syncs your products. It's one of the quickest ways to get product visibility on Google.

A quick order of fixes

  1. Remove the password and connect your own domain.
  2. Set up Search Console and submit your sitemap.
  3. Connect the Google & YouTube channel for free product listings.
  4. Rewrite titles, descriptions and collection intros for your best sellers.
  5. Clean up apps and images for speed.

When you're visible but still not selling

Getting found is half the job. If traffic arrives but doesn't buy, look at the product page and checkout next (product page checklist), and set up the Klaviyo flows that bring visitors back.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take for a Shopify store to show up on Google?

A new store can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks to be indexed. Setting up Search Console, submitting your sitemap and requesting indexing of key pages usually speeds it up. Ranking for competitive product searches takes longer.

Does Shopify submit my sitemap to Google automatically?

Shopify generates a sitemap for you, but you should still submit it in Google Search Console so Google finds it quickly and reports any problems.

Why does my Shopify store show up for my brand name but not my products?

Your store is indexed but not ranking. Improve product and collection titles, write original descriptions, speed up the store, and connect Google free product listings through Shopify's Google & YouTube channel.
